If, like me, you come to Thailand and don’t want to bother subscribing to a post-paid membership, then you should consider DTAC’s pre-paid offers.

So here is how it works: just buy a Happy/DTAC SIM card (199THB) in any DTAC shop or in MBK for instance… plug it and wait for the message… then you’re ready to roll! Just refill your credit by buying pre-paid cards. Yes, nothing fancy here, it works like everywhere else in the world.

Pre-paid amount range from 50THB to 500THB per card, cards that can be bought in any 7Eleven or DTAC shop. However, don’t consider calling abroad with that kind of card as 100THB cards only provide 1/2 minutes of worldwide calls (I got this calling to landlines in France).

(Note than you may also consider AIS’s offers. However I find DTAC quite good in terms of coverage)

But where it gets interesting is when it comes to GPRS/EDGE offers. Indeed, at anytime you can unlock the GPRS function (a call into the call center will do the trick) and you’ll be charged on a pay per data basis (1Kb = 0.03THB or so).

However, if you’d like to get a real GPRS offer, you might consider buying the dedicated refill card (available only -as far as I know- in DTAC shops): 100THB for 10 hours of GPRS/EDGE (unlimited data transfer)… which is a really nice offer!

Other available special offers are listed here (Thai only): DTAC Special Services. So basically here is what you can get: 100THB GPRS refill card (10 hours), 100THB SMS refill card (100 SMS) and 100THB MMS refill card (40MMS).
